There Are No Atheists in Foxholes or on MUNI

A number of readers have been asking me when MUNI would restore nighttime service to the N-Judah line, and one day, whilst leaving the N at the Embarcadero Station downtown, I saw this sign and snapped a photo.

True, it means Really Bad News for the KLM riders – starting soon they’re going to have to take a shuttle bus out to West Portal and points beyond. But look carefully and you’ll see – N Judah service is restored (complete with the new blue ciricled N in the logo!)

So, that’s good news for some of us, anyway. I was really starting to wonder if I’d ever be able to take the N home at night ever again….

Special Note: This posting marks the 100th posting here at the N-Judah Chronicles! Woo hoo!

  1. As you noted, N-Judah will also shortly terminate at Embarcadero. That will be good for me getting on there, as it assures an empty train and a seat as, like a cowboy at the end of a movie, I ride slowly into the sunset.
But the long term plan for the T-third is for it to turn left and go up 4th through the new subway tunnel. So will the N-Judah start running the Embarcadero tracks again years hence.

What does that sign say? that there will be *no* service on the KLM after said date??? it’s not clear.

@shutuponyourcellphone: My apologies – yes, the word “no” is obscured by the bar (I took this pic in a big hurry ) – starting Jan. 29th, the KLM will have a shuttle, and the J and N lines will go back to normal, as God intended.

There will be no KLM service between Castro and West Portal after 9 pm Monday through Friday, starting January 29.
Shuttle buses will run between Van Ness and West Portal approximately 9 pm to 1 am.
This is the start of Phase 2 of the improvements. J, N and T trains will run their complete route. KLM trains will only run to Castro and then turn back.

Brad, don’t put too much into the long term plan for the T-Third Street. Until 4 months ago the plan was to run it as an extension of the K. Even if the central subway isn’t killed, after 10-15 years of the “temporary” T-Third Street route, it’s not going to be easy to change it(especially since the Central Subway would cut service on Market Street)
