The Inner Sunset Farmer’s Market Opens Sunday June 7th

Hopefully, by now you’re aware there’s going to be an Inner Sunset Farmer’s Market, which opens for business on June 7th at 9am. If you’re not aware, well, you are now. It will be located in the parking lot at 9th and Judah.

The opening day should be fun. Sup. Ross Mirkarim will be taking a break from his role as a superhero fighting crime to do the ribbon cutting ceremony at 11am, and there’s going to be all sorts of family-friendly activities and such going on.

Many good people worked very hard to make this a reality, so I think it’s important we all show our support. This will have the effect of not only bringing fresh produce to the neighborhood, but enhance the community feeling of the Inner Sunset on Sundays. Check it out!

Absolutely going to be there. It’s less than a block from us!

  2. Greg says:

same here…between this and the park and so on, it’ll make a sunday in the ‘hood that much nicer!

  3. Dave says:

This is awesome. I love the fact that many SF neighborhoods now have their own weekly Farmer’s Market. Brilliant.

  4. Seven says:

    Congratulations to the Inner Sunset!
In the Outer Sunset, while 94% of residents surveyed supported a farmers’ market, plans were effectively killed by opposition from two local produce stores. The proposed site was to be 39th/Quintara.
I’d be interested to know if the Inner Sunset ran up against merchant opposition, and if so how, you dealt with it.

  5. Steve says:

I plan on being there, camera around my neck.

If you have disposable cash its perfect for you! Its held in a parking lot causing parking problems for the neighboorhood!!! The prices are much higher than the Civic Center Farmers Market. This is nothing more then a Trendy Yuppie Farmers market, some of the stuff they were selling was more than Andronico’s! Get real: We are in a recession, this is truly obscene. I know many Inner Sunset locals including myself who are NOT happy with this situation.

  7. Greg Dewar says:

@brian well judging from the attendance and so on it would seem that most people seem to like it ok…but not everyone has to like everything all the same,I see what you mean, and if we all agreed life would be boring would it not? thank you for your comments.

  8. Brian says:

I agree but not all Inner Sunset residents can afford the prices and yet our valuable parking is being used for this event. We both know that the prices do not reflect todays economic stituation. When I heard this event was going to take place I expected something everyone could afford and I don’t think that’s at all unreasonable. Everyone doesn’t have to like the same thing but it should be affordable .For example: I don’t pay $21 a lb for fish do you? Why not have this event at the Hall of Flowers or in the Newcomer school playground?

  9. Greg Dewar says:

hmm…well to be honest, when I went the day it opened I didn’t really look at the prices because by the time I got there anything I might have purchased was sold out. So I can’t really comment on that too much so I’d ask those who attended to chime in.
As for the location – you’d have to ask the organizers why they picked this location. I know that trying to have anything on SFUSD property enters a world of pain no matter what, and I also know that there were plenty of chances for folks to speak out against this location. But when I see the merchant’s association backing this, presumably those who would miss the Sunday morning parking, I wonder how bad it is to have that closed off.
Again, I’d like to foster some discussion about this, even if it is after the fact, since you do raise a valid concern regarding prices. I mean, if it is in fact pricier than Andronico’s , that’s quite pricey indeed. I’ll try and stop by this weekend and check in earlier, hopefully they won’t have sold out of everything so fast.

I live right on this block, and no one asked me my opinion: I would have stood up for the residents. I love farmers markets, and i support local merchants. However, people need to realize that parking has gotten progressively more ridiculous in this neighborhood, especially on the weekends, ever since the science museum re-opened. This farmers market means that residents don’t have a place to park on Saturday night; unless they feel like waking up at 7am; or a free place to park on Sunday morning. I can tell you this parking lot is well-used on the weekend nights. I’m all for a farmers market — but why isn’t it someplace else?? — like the school yard across from Andronicos or on 7th near the gardens where there isn’t as much competition for parking, or in the park where there is more municipal spaces?

  11. Greg says:

@inner sunset resident: you raise a valid concern, one I can understand as I live on the same block (I think) and I know I’d I owned a car parking would be horrid on my street.
There is an online survey that is being taken on the market and when I get home I will post the URL so people can be heard on this issue. However I do want to remind folks that I posted the time of the meeting before it was apriced and people could have submitted written comments then too.
It’s important that as many people are included in community activites as possible so we all benefit. Thanks to all who have been posting their thoughts here!

I would appreciate being able to express my thoughts on this matter where ever I choose, just as you are able to. No need to diminish me with the soapbox comment.

  14. Greg Dewar says:

Brian, you’ve made your opinions known, over and over again at this site. I really don’t appreciate you trying to hijack this site for your own agenda. I’ve tried to be fair but I can’t have you attacking other readers on the site. That’s bullshit.
If you really hate the market so much, go start your own blog and write about it all you like.
We’ll see how that works out for you.
